C932 Bronze
CNC Machining
Workhorse bearing bronze for bushings and sliding components
C932 bronze, commonly known as SAE 660, is one of the most widely used bearing bronzes.

Reference component geometry; alloy grade is confirmed by material certification.

Copper Development Association data describes C932 as a workhorse bearing alloy and lists a machinability rating around 70. It is used where low friction, conformability, wear behavior, and reliable machining are important.

Why C932 is used for bearings
C932 is a copper-tin-lead-zinc bronze. Its composition provides good anti-friction behavior, good embeddability, resistance to seizure, corrosion resistance in many environments, and useful machinability.
It is particularly suitable for bushings and sleeve bearings operating under moderate loads and speeds with suitable lubrication.
Material values are typical references, not design allowables. Confirm the governing specification, stock form, material certificate and heat-treatment condition for your part.
CNC turning C932
Most C932 components are rotational:
- Bushings
- Sleeves
- Plain bearings
- Thrust washers
- Wear rings
- Valve guides
- Pump bushings
Machining often includes OD turning, ID boring, facing, grooving, threading, chamfering, and lubrication grooves.

Bearing clearance matters more than “tight tolerance”
A bronze bushing should not automatically be designed for the smallest possible bore tolerance.
The correct running clearance depends on shaft size, load, speed, lubrication, temperature, housing stiffness, and installation method.
For press-fit bushings, the bore can shrink after installation. The drawing should account for installed geometry rather than treating the free-state bore as the only functional dimension.

CNC milling C932
Milled applications include wear plates, guide blocks, machine-slide components, thrust plates, and custom low-friction mechanical interfaces.
Flatness, parallelism, and surface finish can matter more than cosmetic appearance.

C932 vs. brass
C360 brass may machine faster, but C932 provides bearing-specific tribological performance.
Use C932 for sliding bearings, bushings, wear interfaces, and lubricated motion. Use brass for general fittings, connectors, threads, and precision hardware when bearing behavior is not required.
Surface finish
Many C932 parts are used as machined. Bearing bores may also be honed or otherwise finished when the application requires a controlled surface.
Surface roughness should be tied to lubrication and load rather than appearance.
Typical C932 parts
- Sleeve bearings
- Bushings
- Thrust washers
- Wear plates
- Pump bushings
- Valve guides
- Guide sleeves
- Pivot bushings
- Machinery bearings
