Surface Finishes
Surface Finishes for CNC Machined Parts
Finishing options include anodizing, bead blasting, plating, polishing and powder coating. Availability depends on the material, geometry and finish specification.

As machined
Natural material appearance with visible tool paths. Specify burr removal and any cosmetic faces.

Anodizing
Protective aluminum finish with clear or dyed options. Review coating thickness and masking on mating features.

Bead blasting
A uniform matte texture. Define appearance expectations and whether it precedes another finish.

Metal plating
Nickel, zinc, tin and other specified coatings. Include substrate, thickness and critical dimension requirements.

Polishing
A smoother surface and reflective appearance. Identify functional and cosmetic surfaces separately.

Powder coating
Colored protective coating for compatible metals. Plan masking around threads, bores and contact surfaces.
Coating thickness can affect threads, bores and mating faces. Include masking notes and define which dimensions apply after treatment.
Design Guidelines
Design Guidelines for CNC Machining
Optimize your parts for cost-effective and high-precision CNC manufacturing. Our engineering team provides free Design-for-Manufacturability (DFM) feedback before production, helping you move smoothly from prototype to production.
| Guideline | Description | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Internal Radii | Sharp internal corners will naturally form radii. Recommended minimum internal radius: ≥ 0.8–1.5 mm Deep pockets: keep depth ≤ 6–8× tool diameter where possible | Ensures better tool access, surface quality and dimensional stability |
| Threads & Tapped Holes | Thread depth recommendations: • Ø 1.5–5 mm → 3× diameter • Ø ≥ 5 mm → 4–6× diameter We support metric, UNC/UNF and custom threads | We can produce threads to any standard specification with high consistency |
| Undercuts | Supported undercut types: • Square profiles • Full radius • Dovetail profiles | Customizable according to part geometry and functional requirements |
| Wall Thickness | Recommended minimum wall thickness: • Aluminum: ≥ 0.8–1.0 mm • Steel / Stainless: ≥ 1.0–1.5 mm Avoid extreme height-to-thickness ratios | Maintains rigidity during machining and reduces risk of deflection |
| Text & Engraving | CNC Milling: • Minimum stroke width: 0.5 mm • Recommended depth: 0.2–0.5 mm Laser engraving also available for finer details | Clear, durable marking with customizable depth and style |
| Tolerances | Standard: ±0.10 mm (ISO 2768-m) Precision: ±0.05 mm High-precision / critical features: ±0.005–0.01 mm (or tighter on request) | Critical dimensions and GD&T should be clearly identified on the drawing |
Please mark cosmetic surfaces, specify edge breaks if required, and indicate any features that must remain free of coating or surface treatment.

CNC Machining FAQs
Answers to common questions about CNC machining quotes, process selection, materials, tolerances and lead times.
What files should I send for a CNC machining quote?
Send a STEP or IGES model with a controlled PDF drawing when available. Include material, quantity, finish, critical dimensions and delivery destination. A 2D drawing is especially useful for tolerances, threads, datums and surface roughness that are not defined in the model.
How do I choose milling, turning or 5-axis machining?
Start with the geometry. Rotational parts often suit turning; pockets and prismatic forms suit milling. Mill-turn can combine rotational and off-axis features, while 5-axis machining helps with compound angles and difficult tool access. We review the complete part before recommending a route.
Can I order a single prototype or a small batch?
Yes. 6CNC supports prototypes and small-batch custom parts. Send the required quantity and any planned repeat orders so material, setup and finishing can be considered together.
What tolerances should I put on my drawing?
Identify dimensions that control function and assembly, then apply the tolerance each feature actually requires. State datums, fits, GD&T and roughness where relevant. Tight tolerances should be reviewed against material, geometry, setup and the intended measurement method.
Can machined parts include surface finishing?
Yes. Available options depend on material and part requirements. Include color, coating specification, thickness, masking and appearance requirements, and state whether critical dimensions apply before or after treatment.
What determines the cost and lead time?
Material and stock availability, quantity, geometry, setup count, machining time, tolerance, finishing and documentation all influence a quotation. Share the required date and any flexible requirements so practical alternatives can be reviewed.
Can you machine plastic as well as metal?
Yes. Options include engineering plastics such as POM, PEEK, Nylon, PTFE, ABS and PC. Grade, moisture absorption, thermal behavior and workholding need to be considered alongside the final dimensions.
How are revisions and repeat orders handled?
Send the approved revision and clearly identify any changes to the model, drawing, material or finish. Confirm which files govern the new order and whether previously approved requirements still apply.
